Johnson & Johnson admits: Our baby products contain cancer-causing formaldehyde

Susan's avatarThe Savvy Sister

This original post written August 2012. Scroll down for recent update. Unfortunately, it’s not surprising.

No more tears?  I would rather have no more formaldehyde.  I just might get my wish.

Today, the personal care giant announced that it would voluntarily (after consistent pressure from the public and groups like EWG) remove hidden formaldehyde, specifically quaternium-15, from their baby products like baby shampoo and baby washes.  Didn’t know that quaternium-15 releases formaldehyde? Formaldehyde is “hidden” in ingredient names like “DMDM hydantoin“, and “1,4 dioxane” (which is “hidden” in listed ingredients like “fragrance”.  It’s all a big fun game, you see.).

“There’s a very lively public discussion going on about the safety of ingredients in personal care products,” said Susan Nettesheim, VP for product stewardship and toxicology for J & J. This “lively discussion” has been going on since 2011.

Lively discussion?  If someone was selling you shampoo for…

Marinated Chicken Breast Middle Eastern Style

I made this dish the other night as a change from the regular chicken and potato dish.  It has a nice spice to it. You can marinate it over night or at least four hours before baking. DSC02565 DSC02568Ingredients:

One pound of Chicken Breasts

2 Big Potatoes

2 Onions

One box of Mushrooms

2 tbsp of Tomato Paste

One tbsp of Hot Sauce

One teaspoon of Ground Coriander

One tsp of Ground Cumin

2 Garlic Cloves

One tbsp of Olive Oil

Salt and Pepper

How to Prepare:

Marinate the chicken breasts with the tomato paste, hot sauce, ground coriander, ground cumin, crushed garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper overnight.

DSC02508 DSC02509 DSC02510 DSC02511 DSC02515

Slice the potatoes, mushrooms and onion.

DSC02534

Season the potato slices with salt and ground coriander.

DSC02538

Grease an oven tray with olive oil and place the potato slices on the bottom.

DSC02540 DSC02543 DSC02545

Place the marinated chicken breasts on top of the potato slices then cover with onion and the mushroom slices.

DSC02548 DSC02547 DSC02555 DSC02556

Cover the tray with foil and bake at 400F/350C for 45 minutes.

Happy Birthday To Me!

For this birthday, I didn’t want to have a cake. Instead, I spoiled my self with my favorite dessert Frozen Chocolate Graham Crackers (also called Succès). It is very easy yet very tasty.

DSC02320 DSC02336

Ingredients:

One Cup of Milk

One Cup of Sugar

350 grams or 12 Ounces of Butter

4 Packs of Graham Crackers (or Social Tea)

One cup of Cocoa Powder

How to Prepare:

Melt the sugar, milk, and the butter in a large pot on medium heat until the milk becomes lukewarm.

DSC02254 DSC02260DSC02267

Turn off the flame, then add the cocoa powder to the milk/butter and mix until the cocoa blends in.

DSC02261 DSC02265DSC02269 DSC02271

Break the crackers into small pieces and mix them thoroughly with the mixture.

DSC02274 DSC02277 DSC02282

Wrap in cling wrap in a roll shape, folding the sides so the mixture doesn’t get out of the wrap and then place it in the freezer until frozen.

DSC02288 DSC02290

Open the wrap and cut it into small pieces before serving.

To make this recipe more fun and mouth watering, you may add more biscuits (Graham Crackers) to the mixture and roll it in a ball shape and then cover with coconut. Place in the fridge until cold 😉
